Heather May’s compositions find their footing in unconventional guitar tunings and intricately crafted lyrics. A search for truth and authenticity ripples through her work. Whether this search finds itself basking in the intensity of love and beauty, fearful in the face of mortality, or yearning for belonging, her songs consistently offer a lyrical boldness that demands thought and earnest reflection from every listener. Her discography includes an EP called “While I’ve Been Away;” a full-length record called “For Mark” (which was awarded Folk Recording of the Year at the 2020 Calgary Music Awards), and her most recent album “Folk Revival.”
Bryson Waind and the CB is a four-piece deep country band out of Calgary. They combine the twang of pure traditional and outlaw country with the improvisational style of 1970s psychedelia. Heavy riffs dissolve into heartbreak verses. Fronted by singer and songwriter Bryson Waind, the songs are a collection of myth and memoir, tied up with yarn. Bryson is backed by seasoned stalwarts, Steve Hazlett, Mark Williams and Chantal Vitalis, who take the songs to the very edge but give you the feeling that you’re always close to home. Gather ‘round for stories from behind saloon doors and over-proof performances.
Woodhouse Big Band is a group of some of Calgary’s finest Big Band musicians coming together to share their love of music.
Growing up in Toronto in the 60’s and 70’s Rutherford first laid hands on a guitar at age 10, and at 16 told his guitar teacher he wanted to play some of the popular rock songs of the day. Rutherford was told “if you want to play rock ’n’ roll you’ll have to learn the blues.” Maintaining a long running residency at Calgary’s current home of the blues, The Blues Can, Rutherford performs solo shows and routinely rocks the house with his blues trio while honing his signature guitar sound and storytelling songwriting style.
Ben Tizzard is a Calgary-based musician who has dedicated his life to the love of music. His musical journey began at the age of 13 when he discovered his father’s acoustic guitar and joined a guitar jam club in junior high. Since then, Ben has never looked back and has been devoted to studying and performing the guitar. With his dedication, talent, and passion for music, Ben Tizzard is carving a promising career in the music industry, captivating audiences with his genre bending guitar playing and heartfelt compositions.
Klez Merovitz is a Calgary-based, five-piece klezmer ensemble, featuring the award-winning vocals of Allan Merovitz. Klezmer music is based in Eastern European, folk roots Jewish party music with elements of swing, folk and middle eastern melodies. From tender, heart-felt ballads to exciting dance music, Klez Merovitz will have you clapping along and dancing as if you were at a Jewish wedding or a Western Canadian family festive gathering.
Esteban Herrera is a pianist, composer, arranger, producer and music director originally from Mexico, living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His music is an original approach to contemporary world jazz with Latin heritage, exploring odd meters and complex rhythms, letting the improvisation to lead each live session and recording. He writes the music and lyrics, arranges, plays the piano, produces and directs his albums. He has released 13 albums as a leader so far.
Acclaimed roots songwriters John Wort Hannam and T. Buckley make up The Woodshed, a modern folk duo based in Alberta. The name The Woodshed refers to the beginning of Buckley and Hannam’s collaboration—woodshedding songs together during a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2017. After a captivating performance at the 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Buckley and Hannam finally decided to ratify their collaboration and bring The Woodshed to life. Together they bring a beautiful vocal blend of brotherly harmonies combined with gutsy, sophisticated songwriting alongside intricate guitar playing.
This trio of rogue troubadours has a sound that is sassy, sultry and just plain fun. The band’s original songs, written by Heather Blush, run the gamut from witty sarcasm to gut-wrenching honesty. This audience-engaging show is sure to leave a lasting impression.
