Job Summary
Heritage Park is looking for enthusiastic individuals to work as Historical Trades Interpreter/Demonstrators in our trades sites. Under the direction of the Exhibit Lead Hands, this position will interpret one or more Heritage Park trade sites and related historical information to our guests through a variety of techniques and demonstrations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Delivers programs to engage visitors using techniques that include living history demonstrations, stationed interpretation, informal guided tours, role acting, and storytelling;
- Prepares sites and materials and ensures proper care of associated artifacts;
- Operates the associated equipment and machinery in accordance with safety, security, and cleaning standards;
- Provides customer service and information to guests in a friendly manner;
- Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience
- Mechanical or trade background in at least one area of the following considered an asset;
- Traditional woodworking, blacksmithing, cold forging, operation of historic engines or repair-work of machinery, knowledge of grain elevator operations, windmills, waterwheels, and historic printing presses;
- Completion of some high school;
- Post-secondary education in related areas (Western Canadian History, historical interpretation, communications) would be an asset;
- Previous experience in historical interpretation, customer service, or tourism would be an asset.
Skills
- Comfortable engaging the public in programs and public speaking;
- Strong verbal communication skills and public relations skills. Additional language skills are an asset;
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations;
- Capable of working well independently and as part of a peer group team.
Special Clothing and Equipment
- Appropriate costuming will be provided by Heritage Park;
- Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee.
Special Working Conditions
- This position will require the incumbent to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time and requires work in non-climate controlled environments.
Hours of Work
- Full-time hours available mid-May to Labour Day, with weekend work during September and October (until Thanksgiving), part-time hours also available throughout the season;
- Schedule varies and will include weekdays, weekends, statutory holidays, and fluctuating hours as required.
