Sr. Ranch Hand

Duties and Responsibilities

• Feeds and handles assigned livestock;
• Gathers eggs as required;
• Maintains relevant pens and other areas related to Agriculture Programming in a neat and clean condition;
• Assists in harnessing teams and keeping harnesses and equipment clean and in good repair;
• May under Teamster supervision start to drive Park horses, as well as assisting Teamsters with hitching/unhitching and handling horses (as experience permits);
• May be asked to prepare horses and carriages for evening charter functions;
• Repairs fences/gates and buildings as necessary;
• Assists in various farming tasks including plowing, harvest, etc.;
• Provides service and information to guests in a friendly and courteous manner;
• Other duties as assigned.

Education

• High School completion;
• Study in a post-secondary field related to agriculture would be an asset.

Experience

• Previous experience working on a farm or ranch is necessary;
• Familiarity with livestock, their care, and how to properly maintain the ranch/farm area is important.

Skills

• Applicants must be organized and alert while working around livestock;  
• The ability to learn new methods or procedures is also important;  
• Tact and good verbal communication skills in dealing with staff and guests are essential;
• Fluency in English is essential.

Special Clothing and Equipment

• This is a costumed position with costume(s) to be provided by Heritage Park;
• Appropriate footwear as designated by the Costume Room at Heritage Park will be provided by the employee.

Special Working Conditions

• This position involves some amount of physical labour;
• As this is largely an outdoor position, exposure to a variety of weather conditions is certain;
• Working with livestock also implies a degree of unpredictability.

Hours of Work

• Various scheduled hours of work including weekends, statutory holidays, fluctuating hours and overtime as required.
