Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects the engines, tests connections between cars, and assesses the operation of all equipment;
  • Ensures that trains are safe for passenger transport;
  • Keeps log book up-to-date;
  • Operates the train during Park visitor hours;
  • Provides Customer Service and information to guests as necessary in a courteous and friendly manner;
  • Notes and reports property damage or any unsafe conditions;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Applicants must be licensed 4th class or 4th class temporary engineers;
  • A railway certificate would be an asset.

Experience

  • Previous experience in locomotive operation, maintenance, and familiarity with steam locomotives would be an asset.

Skills

  • The ability to detect and correct problems efficiently and promptly are essential.;
  • Applicants must possess a capacity for learning quickly;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a definite asset;
  • Fluency in English is essential;
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Special Clothing and Equipment

  • Costumes will be supplied by Heritage Park as required;
  • Washing and maintaining Costumes in a presentable fashion will be the employees’ responsibility;
  • Individuals will be required to supply their own appropriate footwear, to be approved by the Costume Department Supervisor during Park open season periods;
  • Safety equipment as required will be supplied by Heritage Park and maintained by the employee.

Special Working Conditions

  • The employee must be prepared to work in a variety of weather conditions;
  • A considerable amount of standing and other strenuous duties are required to complete the work assigned;
  • This position requires a person in good physical condition.

Hours of Work

  • Various scheduled hours of work including possible weekends, statutory holidays, fluctuating hours and overtime as required.
