About the Claresholm General Store

Enjoy the nostalgia of an authentic period candy store - from an era when candy was a rare and precious treat!

History

S.A. Mostad was part of a group of Norwegian immigrants from drought-stricken Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, who built his general store in Claresholm, circa 1905. He proudly watched it become the hub of social and economic life in the small prairie town.

The building later became a boardinghouse, the Claresholm Town Hall and the headquarters of the town’s RCMP detachment. Mostad’s general store was where settlers bought everything they couldn’t make themselves. A barter system was frequently in place, with dry goods exchanged for eggs and butter. In 1964, Heritage Park bought the building from a contractor for $400.

The Claresholm General Store is open during regular summer operating hours.
