About the Lord Chisholm's Windmill

Lord Chisholm, one of many British gentlemen to settle in Southern Alberta around the turn of the 20th century, likely had the wooden tower for his windmill built by labourers on his farm near Crossfield, Alberta, in 1893. The mill head was constructed by the Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company of Beatrice, Nebraska, some time after 1931.

The windmill stood atop a unique three-storey tower, which jutted out of Lord Chisholm’s farmhouse, and was most likely used to provide pressurized water for household uses as well as supplying water to the labourers’ bunkhouse. In 1977, the owners of the former Chisholm property, Bill and Shirley Cameron, donated the tower to Heritage Park, while McPherson and Thom (Alberta) Ltd. of Calgary donated the windmill’s head.
