About the Narrow Gauge Railway

Narrow-gauge railway equipment was used in mining and construction applications where size and weight were crucial factors. Railway gauge refers to the width of the track between the rails. narrow gauge is any measurement less than the standard 4′-081/2″ between flanges. Heritage Parks’ collection includes 26″, 36″ and 42″ narrow gauge rolling stock.

In the late nineteenth century, narrow gauge railways replaced horses, mules, bull teams and human power as the primary method of transportation in and around Alberta’s numerous coal mines.

Heritage Park’s narrow gauge collection includes a Crowsnest Pass Coal & Coke Company saddle tank steam locomotive which once hauled coal cars from the pit head to the tipple, two compressed air engines for subsurface use, several coal cars, two inclined miners’ cars and some light rail.
