About the Toole Barn

This barn, built by William Toole behind his house in 1903, represents a typical “backyard barn” used by many city dwellers to house a family’s horses and carriage.

Though Toole’s father saw his livestock business wiped out by a tidal wave in Wexford County, Ireland, William prospered in Canada, assuming important titles with the Canadian Pacific Railway’s land department. In 1897, he and partner George L. Peet formed Toole Peet & Co., a financial, real estate and insurance agency that is still in operation in Calgary today.
