About the Vegetable Gardens and Heritage Seed Preservation
Historical gardens and flowerbeds dot the landscape of Heritage Park, and are intended to enhance a visitor’s historical experience by presenting some of the vegetables, flowers and herbs commonly grown in gardens throughout Western Canada before 1914.
The Park’s five vegetable gardens contain such old-fashioned varieties as Green Oak Leaf lettuce, Oxheart carrots, Scarlet Runner beans, Lutz Green Leaf beets and Large Manitoba peas. Flower gardens contain such historical specimens as Siberian irises, day lilies, hollyhocks, monkshood, clematis, peonies, geraniums and bleeding hearts. Other gardens feature historical varieties of wheat, herbs, prairie grasses and native wildflowers.
